Primarily known as an actor, director, and performer, Cheech Marin has developed the finest private collection of Chicano art in the United States. Much of it formed the core of his blockbuster exhibition Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge, which broke attendance records during its groundbreaking 12-city tour during 2001-2007 to major art museums across the United States. Some of these paintings will be shown in the upcoming Los Angelenos/Chicano Painters of L.A.: Selections from the Cheech Marin Collection, which will be on view at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), June 15 to November 2, 2008.
“Chicano art is American art. My goal is to bring the term ‘Chicano’ to the forefront of the art world,” says Cheech. His passion in achieving this goal is driving new projects. Papel Chicano: Works on Paper from the Collection of Cheech Marin is an exhibition that opened this past fall at the Mesa Arts Center in Arizona and is now on view at the new MUZEO in Anaheim, California. Several major exhibitions are also in development for 2008 and beyond: Chicanitos: Little Paintings from The Chicano Collection of Cheech Marin; works by Chicana artists; and new paintings.
